Finding your location
Start by entering the basic location of the journey you would like to map by typing the city or place name in the 'New Location' box and press "Go". The map should jump to your selected location. The zoom level can be selected by using the + and - keys on the map itself. To move the map either use the cursor keys situated on the top left of the map or click and drag the mouse across the map as required. Before you map your run you may wish to change the settings depending on what calculations you require from the site. Choose these as follows;
Settings
There are various settings that affect how the mapping works.
Under ‘Route Info’
- Select the sport for which you're mapping the route. This will affect how the energy use shown in the route info section is calculated
At the top of the ‘Controls’ section there are 3 sets of toggle buttons:
- ‘Start’ ‘Stop’ - This control whether or not route editing is active. If stop is selected clicks on the map will not add points to the route.
- ‘Draw’ / ‘Edit’ - In draw mode single clicks on the add new line sections to the map. In edit mode the ends of existing line sections are highlighted and may be dragged to alter their position.
- ‘Follow Roads’ / ‘Don't Follow’ - If follow roads is selected new line sections will be routed along roads. If don't follow is selected new line sections will be added as a straight path from the last point.
In the preferences section at the bottom of the lefthand column are a number of other settings. Generally, these are settings that you'll set once and then leave while you're mapping.
- ‘Distance Markers’ - When ticked, this will flag on the map, as you enter your route, the distance you have travelled (either miles or kilometres depending on your chosen settings).
- ‘Auto-Scroll Map’ - This, when selected, will automatically re-centre the map around each point of the run as it is entered to give you a wider view of each step’s surrounding area.
- Choose whether you would like your distance to be calculated in miles or kilometres.
- Choose whether you would like your energy use to be calculated in Calories (kCal) or Joules.
- Enter your weight (in Kgs) - this is used in the energy calculations.
Mapping Your Route
When you have entered your preferred settings and are ready to map your route, go to the ‘Controls’ panel:
- ‘Start’ Once you have selected this, click on the map where your journey begins. This point will be marked with a green flag. To continue mapping your route, simply click once on the map to indicate each point of your journey. Your route will be marked with a red line.
- ‘Stop’ Click on this when you have finished mapping your route.
- ‘Undo’ This will remove your last action and can be done several times if you need to remove more than one step.
- ‘Clear All’ Selecting this will remove all entries made on the current recording. However recording will continue unless you click the ‘Stop button’.
- ‘Close Loop’ Clicking this at any point during the mapping of your route will return you to your start point. However recording does not automatically stop so you can continue mapping beyond this point.
- ‘Out and Back’ When clicked this will alter the distance information to display that of both the outward and return trip assuming your return route retraces your outward journey.
- ‘Altitude’ Near the bottom-left of the map is an altitude button. When this is clicked a box will appear at the bottom of the screen showing the altitude. The altitude is either measured in feet or metres depending on whether you are measuring the route in miles or kilometres.

Search Engine
First, centre the map on the area you are interested in. Then select the sports you'd like to search. Now move the sliders to the distance range you are looking for. You can select for matching routes to be shown in specific orders (by default we show the most viewed routes first but this can be changed to show the most saved or newest first). You may also select how many routes are shown at once (up-to 5 per page). Pressing the ‘New Search’ button will start the search process - this may take a few seconds. To view a particular route in detail press the View Route button. Mapometer will only show routes that fall completely within the specified area. If you want to look at a different area move the map and press the ‘change search criteria’ button and ‘New Search’.
